IOD Paint Inlay sheets are handmade from real paint.
They are not stickers, synthetic film, or decoupage.
With this technique, you get anything but a smooth, even, perfect repeat - and that's the secret behind the popularity of Paint Inlay sheets!
The design transfers from the Paint Inlay sheet to wet paint, and each transfer is unique.
You can use one sheet 2-4 times, with the design looking more worn with each use and resulting in beautiful, textured patterns.
Paint Inlays are made to work with traditional chalk paints.
Other paints can also be used, but working time varies. If you choose a paint from another brand or range, test how the design transfers before starting a larger project.
When you use IOD Paint Inlay, the design is physically embedded into the surface of your project.
Once dry, the paper is removed, leaving an authentic painted design and a textured, almost leather-like surface on the object/surface.
IOD Paint Inlays are made from artist-quality paints specially developed for decorative use.
Naturally organic, Paint Inlays transfer the painted design, creating a slightly varied and uniquely beautiful look each time they are used.
The results are visually interesting and structurally complex.
The paint remains "active" until sealed with a topcoat.
This means you can work with it and use special techniques or add your own touches before sealing your piece - you can even paint designs with a brush!
The paint in the designs is water-activated until sealed. Also read the Instructions and Protecting the Design tabs below.
Instructions are included in English.

How do I use IOD Paint Inlay sheets?
Step 1: Plan the layout of your designs on the surface.
Step 2: Use the grid on the back of the inlay sheet as a guide, cut as needed, and set aside. If using a repeating pattern and aligning it continuously, trim the excess margin from each sheet.
Step 3: Apply a generous, even coat of mineral-based chalk paint to a properly prepared surface. Work in small sections, typically no larger than 30x30cm or one sheet at a time, so you can control the paint's drying window as you work.
Step 4: While the paint is still wet, place the sheet pattern-side down (grids are printed on the back to make it easy to distinguish the front from the back) onto the wet paint and smooth it out, but avoid moving the sheet around on the wet paint.
Step 5: Lightly spray an even mist of water over the sheet to wet it. Use a smooth damp sponge, a soft folded cloth, or a small IOD Silicone Paint Blade, and gently dab with even pressure to ensure good contact between the design and the painted surface. Avoid moving or dragging the Paint Inlay sheet too much after placing it, as this may cause blurring or smudging.
Step 6: Repeat steps 3-5 to complete the design, aligning sections as needed. The grid lines can help you align the edges of the pattern, if needed.
Step 7: Let the Inlay design dry. Drying time can vary from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on conditions. The paper, when sprayed wet, will lighten as it dries.
Step 8: When you're ready to remove the Paint Inlay sheets from the surface, spray evenly with water again and let it soak in for 30 seconds; this helps the design release. Carefully pull the paper up, starting from one corner, and keep it at a low angle. It should come away easily without tearing. If not, spray again, wait a moment, and then try again.
Step 9: If you like, you can blend or soften the pattern with water, as the pigment is still movable and active. You can even add additional colors.
Step 10: Once you're happy with the Paint Inlay design, let the project dry completely. Drying time varies depending on the thickness of the paint layers, the amount of water used during the process, the room temperature, and weather conditions. If the surface feels cool, it isn't completely dry. To be safe, wait 24 hours.
Step 11: Now it's time to finish the surface with a coating.
Protecting the Paint Inlay design
There are a few different finishing options:
Spray your preferred water-based sealer using a spray gun designed for paints and finishes; add, for example, Finishing Coat from a spray bottle.
Lightly brush a water-based polyurethane-type sealer, varnish, or epoxy directly onto your work. This method will likely cause some pigment to transfer; this can be minimized by avoiding overworking the surface.
Create a "sprayable" fixative spray using a 50/50 mixture of water and your favorite water-based sealer. Apply with a fine mist sprayer. Let it dry completely, then apply a brush-on sealer.
First, seal your work with a commercially available spray sealer or artist's fixative. Let it dry completely, then apply your chosen finishing product.
You can also use wax to seal your artwork. Apply according to the manufacturer's instructions and buff to a shine as usual.
Some oil-based finishing products can be applied directly to the surface with a brush without reactivation. Test on a small area before applying. Note that most oil-based finishing products tend to turn amber over time, which is most noticeable on light colors.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Always check the compatibility of sealers/finishing products when using more than one product.
Bonus tip! If you’re an avid DIYer or painter and do lots of different DIY projects, two Frenchic products are - 'must-haves': Frenchic waxes and Finishing Coat.
Choosing a paint is easy with the Frenchic range. If you're painting indoor surfaces, you can choose a shade from any range.
Frenchic paints are so-called hybrid paints, suitable for many different surfaces and materials.
The 27-page, Finnish-language Frenchic color guide booklet helps you choose Frenchic shades
The color guide also includes all shades sold in Finland (October 2024) and their descriptions.
You can find the color guide here
The back page of the handy color guide has space for notes, where you can list the shades and surfaces you have already used.
Please note! For technical printing reasons, the color guide does not replace the color chart or serve as a shade sample. Order the color chart separately. The color chart includes shades from two ranges: Al Fresco and Lazy Range. The color chart is in English.
Peel & Stick color samples are removable mini samples made with real paint to ensure a perfect color match. No mess, no stress – peel the sticker off its backing, stick it to a wall or cabinet door, and let your heart decide!
By ordering Peel & Stick samples, you can test the paint right where the decision is made: in your own home. Order at least two of your favorite shades and see the difference in natural light, artificial light, and against different wall surfaces.
Easy to compare and reliable results.
We do our utmost to ensure that the shades in our online store are as close as possible to the actual shades, but colors may vary between devices - depending on several factors, such as the display settings on your phone, tablet, or computer.
This means that we cannot guarantee that the paint shade will exactly match what you see on your screen.
We always recommend testing the shade in the space and on the surface where you plan to use it before starting a larger project. Order individual shade cards, a Color Chart, or a Color Guide magazine for color planning.
Please also note that 250 ml and 750 ml tins are always from different production batches. Avoid shade differences between batches by mixing paints from different batches together: this will ensure that the shade is exactly the same throughout your project.
Examine and assess the shade only once it is dry and has been painted at least twice according to the instructions. Order a small tin to test it, or visit your nearest retailer to see the colors in person. The color chart includes shades from two ranges: Al Fresco and Lazy Range.
NOTE! The Peel & Stick sample has the text Chalk Wall Paint printed on it because the shade samples were originally made for choosing wall paint shades. Please note that the shade range in Finland differs from that in England.
However, you can also use a Peel & Stick shade sample to choose shades from other ranges!
Also make sure you set aside enough paint for your project:
Make sure you set aside enough paint to complete your project. Due to high demand, some shades are also sold out. The standard advice in the industry is that if you need more than one can of paint, make sure they are from the same production batch (batch number) or, if that is not possible, mix the batches together before painting to ensure a consistent result. Thoroughly mixing the paint (for a long time and right down to the bottom) is important to achieve the correct shade. If touch-up painting is needed, we recommend painting the entire area instead of doing a small patch, so that the repair is as inconspicuous as possible.
