Marbling is a great way to unleash your creativity!

Different layers and painting techniques are fun projects. Combine your own tools with this marbling guide to get a personalized result.

Make a few practice pieces first to get comfortable with the tools.

Beautiful marble is a stunning surface in interior design, and with these instructions, you can easily create an authentic-looking, gorgeous surface on almost any surface. Use colors and shades according to your taste. You can paint a greenish stone surface, gray, or reddish.
With this technique, you can create small and large surfaces. Start with a smaller practice piece, like a tray. You can marble a table top, kitchen cabinets, or even an entire wall.

You will need at least these for the project:

Supply list:
  • 2-5 different shades of paint
  • Finishing Coat
  • Natural sponge
  • Sturdy flat brush
  • Long sturdy bird feather
  • Dry the cloth

First paint the base shade

Start the project by painting the base as evenly as possible, e.g., with a microfiber roller.

The best paints for this purpose are from the Lazy Range or Al Fresco series, as they have a feature that smooths the surface beautifully even as it dries. Let the base dry thoroughly before starting the effect.

Choose the shade for the patterns

Start creating the pattern with thinned paint (do this in a separate cup).
Mix:
  • 1/3 paint
  • 1/3 Finishing Coat
  • 1/3 Water
The mixture is necessary to make the paint blend beautifully without leaving harsh edges, and the thinned paint gives you extra time to work the color.

Sketch with sponge and cloth

Dip a natural sponge into the thinned paint mixture and start dabbing it randomly onto the primed surface. Leave some empty spots to keep the surface lively.

Take a dry cloth and fold it into a tight bundle to press the largest amounts of water off the color spots. Turn the cloth as it gets wet to prevent the colors from spreading too much. Dabbing is the key here, as rubbing and wiping will not leave a natural stone-like effect.
With this same technique, you can also add one or more shades on top if you want! At this point, you don't need to wait for the paint to dry, as the mixing of colors on the surface can even create stunning new dimensions on the surface.

With a natural feather

When you are satisfied with the texture of the base, take a firm natural feather, which you dip again into the diluted paint mixture.

Start lightly dragging the feather on the surface, creating "cracks". Also use the sideways movement of the feather, and try what kind of marks you get when you press the feather harder or lighter. Slight back and forth movement, or making branching sections. This is a lovely phase!

With a brush

When you have created the feather effect on the surface, take a firm dry brush and dab strongly from top to bottom. You will see how the paint blends and fades beautifully on the surface. If some spot is too strong, you can also dab off the excess with a cloth or lightly spray water on it.

Look at and examine the result after it has dried, and you can still add colors with the same techniques. If some spot looks too strong, soften it by dabbing diluted base color over it.

Finish the dry surface

You definitely want to protect the surface you made properly. Use Finishing Coat for this purpose, which you apply with the soft white side of a heart sponge over the entire surface. A few thin layers are good and you get a beautiful shine; 3-4 layers provide a good, moisture-resistant surface.
For a matte finish, you can also use Tuff Top Coat or wax.
One more tip for this - you can also tint the Finishing Coat again with just a small drop of paint, which makes the colors appear even more vivid in the final result.
