Frequently asked questions about furniture wax, with answers (FAQ)
What is furniture wax and how is it used?
Furniture wax is a natural, often beeswax-based wood wax used to finish, distress, and care for furniture and wooden surfaces. It gives the surface a natural, breathable, and pleasant finish.
What can furniture wax be used for?
Furniture wax can be used:
- for finishing painted furniture
- to lighten panels (white wax) or darken them (brown wax)
- to create a patina over all Frenchic paints
- for untreated wood surfaces
- for rattan and wicker surfaces
- to care for the wood surfaces of antique furniture that has already been waxed
Can furniture wax be used over a painted surface?
Yes. Furniture wax is ideal for finishing and distressing painted surfaces. It softens the look and highlights details such as edges and decorative carvings.
Does furniture wax protect the surface?
Furniture wax protects the surface from light wear and moisture, but it does not form a hard protective film like varnish. It is best suited to decorative furniture and lightly used surfaces.
Can furniture wax be used in a kitchen or bathroom?
Furniture wax is not the best choice for surfaces exposed to constant water, grease, or heavy wear. For these applications, a tougher protective finish is recommended, such as Tuff Top Coat or another finishing product.
How do you apply furniture wax?
Apply furniture wax in thin coats with a brush or lint-free cloth. Wipe off any excess wax, then lightly polish the surface after it has dried.
Is Frenchic wood wax liquid?
Frenchic waxes are solid, beeswax-based wood waxes that are pliable and soft to use and apply with a brush.
Why is furniture wax applied in thin coats?
Thin coats dry evenly and create a beautiful finish. A coat of wax that is too thick can remain sticky and won’t provide the best protection or appearance.
Is furniture wax safe to use indoors?
Yes. Frenchic furniture waxes are made from natural ingredients, contain no harsh solvents, and have no pungent odor. They’re suitable for indoor use.
What’s the difference between clear and tinted wax?
Clear wax protects and finishes the surface without changing its color. Tinted waxes add patina and depth and highlight details with their color. Clear wax is also often used underneath tinted wax or for blending.
What shades of Frenchic wax are available?
Grey, brown, white and clear. Frenchic wood waxes have subtle shades and aren’t intended to create an opaque finish. When applied to bare wood, the grain remains beautifully visible with every shade.
Can furniture wax be reapplied later?
Yes. Furniture wax is easy to maintain. You can clean the surface gently and apply another coat of wax as needed.
Can I wax a varnished wooden kitchen table top over the varnish?
We don’t recommend it, as wax won’t adhere to a varnished surface and isn’t durable enough for a kitchen table that gets heavy use.
Do I need to apply wax over Frenchic paint for protection?
No, you don’t need to. All Frenchic paints already have protective properties built in. You can use wax to change the shade of the paint, add patina, and create decorative light and shadow effects. Wax also changes the sheen of a painted surface, giving matt paint a soft, satin finish. For example, grey wax looks exceptionally beautiful over white paint, highlighting the edges and decorative details.
Which wax do you recommend for beginners?
Think about your style. If you make a lot of rustic furniture, brown wax adds a beautiful patina and gives bare wood surfaces the look of old planks. If you paint a lot of furniture white, grey wax beautifully and subtly highlights the edges and decorative details. Remember to get a quality wax brush to use with the wax.
