Frequently asked questions about the decoupage technique (FAQ)

What does the decoupage technique mean?

Decoupage is a technique in which a paper pattern or a whole sheet is attached to a painted or treated surface and finished with layers so that the result looks painted or partly embedded in the surface.

Is decoupage difficult for beginners?

No. Decoupage is well suited to beginners when the preparation is done carefully and you proceed step by step. Small projects and individual sheets are a good way to practice the technique. Practice with smaller images before starting a larger project.

What surfaces is decoupage suitable for?

Decoupage is suitable for furniture, cabinet doors, dressers, drawer units, frames and pictures, among other things. The technique works best on painted, smooth surfaces, but the sheets also look stunning on curved surfaces such as round lamps and pots. The art sheets in the Frenchic online store are large, thin and specifically designed for furniture and other large surfaces. You can also use parts of the large sheets on smaller surfaces.

Do you need separate glue for decoupage?

Decoupage sheets can be attached with a finishing product that works both as an adhesive and as a protective coating. Separate glue is not always needed when you use the right finishing product. Frenchic Finishing Coats make the surface splash-resistant and fully wipeable right away. Frenchic products are safe, fragrance-free, water-based and quick-drying.

How do you make a decoupage surface durable?

Finish the surface with several thin coats of finishing product or Frenchic natural wax. You can choose a matte Tuff Top Coat or a glossy Finishing Coat. The wax leaves a soft, satin-matte finish.

Can decoupage be used on pictures and in art?

Yes. Decoupage is ideal for pictures, mixed media art and upcycled art projects. The technique allows you to create layered, expressive surfaces.
